Competition
The practice of Aikido is non-competitive. There are, for instance, no matches or sparring in Aikido. When working together, both partners are trying to learn Aikido, though each has a different viewpoint. One partner is the attacker, the other the defender. They are not in opposition, since the goal of each is to find out what does and doesn’t work, and to help their partner learn this as well. The partners are just that, partners, working together to find out what does and doesn’t work. Aikido practice is not the place to hone your competitive spirit, but rather a place to learn cooperation and harmony with a partner.
