Parents
We have a few requests for parents, in order to allow the class to run as smoothly as possible:
  • We encourage parents to bring their children (particularly younger children) to and from the dojo already dressed in their gi. We don't supervise the dressing rooms, and things can get a bit loud in the dressing rooms, particularly after class if all of the children try to change at once.
  • Parents may drop off their children and leave for the hour, if they desire. Children are expected to be on time to class, and likewise, prompt pickup is desirable.
  • Parents may stay and observe the class (which we encourage), but should do so in a quiet and respectful manner. Eating is not permitted in the dojo, except during special events. Parents' (and siblings') shoes must be left in the shoe rack at the door. Parents should not attempt to coach their children during class unless they are on the mat, to do so causes confusion for the children.
  • Parents who are enrolled in the adult Aikido program at the dojo may participate in the children's classes as assistant instructors. Please contact one of the instructors to discuss this possibility.
  • We ask that all parents review the section on Behavior in the Dojo with their child prior to the first class, and as often as it seems necessary thereafter.
  • Please ensure that your child's gi fits properly. An all too common problem is that the pant legs and sleeves are too long. We recognize that it is very difficult to buy a gi that fits correctly, for a variety of reasons. If you somehow end up with a gi with pant legs that cover your child's feet, please take a hem in the pants so that your child doesn't trip and fall. In a similar manner, please ensure that the sleeves of the jacket do not cover your child's hands, as this adds needless frustration to their attempts to work with a partner. You can always let down the pant legs and sleeves later. Your child will have a safer and more enjoyable time in class with shorter rather than longer pant legs and jacket sleeves.
