1. Perform choku tsuki (1stsuburi).
Slide back to your right rear, raising your right hand over
your head to bring the jo into upper guard position (jodan
no kamae).
2. Slide forward again, dropping
the jo down to horizontal and perform choku tsuki.
Slide back to your right rear, raising your right hand over
your head to bring the jo into upper guard position (jodan
no kamae).
3. Slide your right hand in
to your left hand, let go with your left hand and rotate the
jo over your head with the tip of the jo moving left and up,
so the butt of the jo is facing forward. Grab the butt of
the jo with your left hand, step forward with your right foot,
and perform shomen uchi.
4. Raise your left hand above
your head into jodan no kame as you shift your weight forward
onto your right foot. Then point the jo above and slightly
behind you by moving the tip of the jo to the right whlie
raising your right hand above your left hand (which hasnt
moved).Step forward and to your left with your left foot and
perform shomen uchi. Your left foot is forward but your
right hand is forward on the jo. (Taken together, #3
from after the hand change along with #4 are equivalent to
the 7th suburi after raising the jo above your head).
5. Look to your right rear and
move the left hand from one end of the jo to the other and
thrust on your right side (ushiro tsuki, 3rd suburi) toward
the knee of the opponent behind you. Move your hips to
the right as you perform the thrust.
6. Move your hips the rest of
the way to the right in order to finish a pivot of 180 degrees
without stepping, then step forward with your left foot and
perform choku tsuki. There is no hand change, though
the thrust is made with the other end of the jo from the thrust
in #5.
7. Raise your right hand above
your head into jodan no kame and slide your right hand in
to your left hand, let go with your left hand and rotate the
jo over your head with the tip of the jo moving left then
up, so the butt of the jo is facing forward. Grab the butt
of the jo with your left hand, step forward with your right
foot, and perform shomen uchi. (identical to end of #2
and #3)
8. Raise your left hand above
your head into jodan no kame and then rotate the jo
over your head with the tip of the jo moving right and up
until it points above and slightly behind you. Then
step forward and to your left with your left foot and perform
shomen uchi. Your left foot is forward but your right hand
is forward on the jo. (identical to #4)
9. Pivot 180 degrees without
stepping while holding your left hand fixed at your center
and using your right hand to raise the jo vertical and then
dropping it horizontal again pointing in the opposite direction
from which it started. You are in right hanmi with your right
hand forward on the jo.
10. Slide forward on your right
foot and perform choku tsuki.
(up to this point, the 21 and 22 count katas are identical)
11. Raise your left hand above
your head into jodan no kame and then rotate the jo
over your head with the tip of the jo moving right and up
until it points above and slightly behind you.
Then slide forward slightly on your right foot, and perform
shomen uchi.
12. Take your left hand off
of the jo, place it in front of your right hand and slide
your right hand back to the butt of the jo. As you perform
the hand change step forward into left guard position (hidari
kamae). Without pause slide forward and perform choku tsuki
(1st suburi).
Then slide back to your right rear, raising your right hand
over your head bringing the jo into jodan no kamae.
13. Perform yokomen uchi as
in #3 and #7, rotating the jo around your right hand and stepping
back on your left foot.
Slide back to your left rear, reach your right hand to the
tip of the jo, push the jo back through your left hand until
your right hand is against your chest and your left hand is
next to your left hip. This is gedan no kamae. Number 13 should
be performed as one continuous movement.
(Up to this point, the 21 and 22 count katas are similar,
though 11 through 13 are counted differently and have slightly
different footwork. After this point they diverge considerably,
but remain similar enough to be confusing. )
14. Step forward with your left
foot. Raise the jo to horizontal so your right hand is near
your right ear, while performing a sweeping strike toward
your opponents head.
15. Slide forward with your
left foot and perform a reverse thrust (gyakute tsuki) to
your opponents face. Your left hand and left foot
are both forward.
16. Let go with your right hand
and reach past your left hand from underneath the jo. Flip
the jo over so that your left hand is in front. This vertical
movement knocks down a thrust that is coming toward your chest.
Without pause, slide forward slightly on your left foot and
perform a choku tsuki.
17. Raise your right hand over
your head to jodan no kame. Slide back and to the right.
Slide your right hand in to your left, let go with your left
hand and rotate the jo over your head with the tip moving
left and up so the butt of the jo faces forward (as in #3
and #7). Grab the butt of the jo with your left hand, take
a small step forward with your right foot and a large step
back with your left foot. Perform a yokomen uchi strike at
knee level, dropping down onto your left knee.
Reach your right hand to the tip of the jo, push the jo back
through your left hand until your right hand is against your
chest and your left hand is next to your left hip. This is
gedan no kamae. Number 17 is performed as one continuous movement.
18. As you rise up from your
left knee, step forward with the left foot, pushing your left
hand forward to perform a circular strike at knee level (gedan
gaeshi). Pull your right foot back slightly. Both of your
hands should be in front of your body. Arms are bent at the
elbows.
19. With your hands in the same
position perform a reverse thrust (gyakute tsuki) towards
the opponents other knee. End in left hanmi.
20. Let go with your right hand
and reach past your left hand from underneath the jo. Flip
the jo over so that your left hand is in front. Without pausing,
slide forward slightly on your left foot and perform a choku
tsuki to your opponents midsection.
21. Slide back slightly on your
right foot as you swing your hips to the right and slide your
left hand to the front of the jo and your right hand about
1/3 of the way from the other end of the jo. Then take
a step forward with your right foot and back on your left
while you sweep the right (formerly rear) end of the jo around
in a strike toward your opponents head as you slide
your right hand part way down the jo.
22. Let go with your left hand
and reach past your right hand from underneath the jo. Flip
the jo over so that your right hand is in front. Without
pausing slide forward on your right foot and perform choku
tsuki. This serves to turn the right hand over from
palm down to palm up, with the right hand still forward at
the end as it was at the start.
End as you began, in left hanmi
holding the jo vertically on the floor with the left hand.
