1.
Ichi No Kumijo
Uke begins in hidari (left) kamae (guard). Nage begins in hidari
hanmi with jo vertical on the floor.
Uke performs choku tsuki (1st suburi).
Nage steps slightly to the left, slides forward, and performs
kaeshi tsuki (2nd suburi) to uke's chest. Over uke's jo.
Uke slides to the left rear, parries nage's thrust to the right
by rotating the right hand clockwise, and performs choku tsuki
to nage's face.
Nage steps to the right rear and raises the jo overhead to parry
uke's thrust. Underneath uke's jo. Nage slides the right hand
in to the left hand, rotates the jo overhead, steps with the
right foot, and performs shomen uchi to uke's head.
Uke slides the left hand to the tip of the jo, slides the right
hand to the center of the jo, and drops the left hand toward
the left hip so that the jo is fairly vertical, while stepping
back with the left foot. This parries nage's strike slightly
to the left.
Uke pushes down on nage's jo and slides in for gyakute tsuki
(reverse thrust) to nage's face. No hand change.
Nage steps across the line with the left foot and raises the
jo overhead, parrying underneath uke's jo. Nage rotates the
jo overhead and performs a final shomen uchi. No hand change.
The right foot comes across the line to the left. Nage ends
with left foot forward but right hand forward on the jo.
2. Ni No Kumijo
Uke begins in hidari kamae. Nage begins in hidari hanmi with
jo vertical on the floor.
Uke performs choku tsuki.
Nage points the tip of the jo toward uke, grabs the jo toward
the bottom with the right hand and slides to the right rear.
The jo remains fairly vertical, nage's left hand ends up close
to the right shoulder. The hips rotate slightly to the right
to parry the thrust off the line to the right.
Nage performs choku tsuki to uke's face.
Uke steps to the right and slightly forward with the right foot
and raises the jo overhead, pushing the jo forward to parry
underneath nage's thrust. The left foot is still on the line
and therefore uke is not in hanmi.
Uke pulls the left foot around into hanmi, slides the right
hand in to the left, rotates the jo overhead and strikes down
at nage's left knee. Uke now has right foot forward and the
right hand forward on the jo.
Nage pivots the right foot to the right and slides back to the
right rear, dropping the left hand so the jo is somewhat vertical
and blocks the strike. The hips rotate to the left.
Uke performs choku tskui to nage's chest with the right foot
forward.
Nage makes a large step across the line to the left with the
left foot and performs choku tsuki to uke's right ribs. The
right foot also comes across the line to the left.
3. San No Kumijo
Uke begins in hidari kamae. Nage begins in hidari hanmi
with jo vertical on the floor.
Uke performs choku tsuki.
Nage grabs the top of the jo with the right thumb pointing up,
slides back and parries the thrust with the jo fairly vertical.
The hips rotate slightly to the right to direct the thrust off
the line.
Uke slides forward for another choku tsuki.
Nage slides off line to the right rear, grabs the low end of
jo with right hand and flips the tip of the jo down to horizontal,
ontop of uke's jo. Nage is now is hidari kamae. Nage performs
choku tsuki to uke's chest.
Uke slides back and brings the jo horizontally across his body,
tip pointing to the left, ontop of nage's jo.
Nage slides in and performs choku tsuki to uke's chest. This
is a quick movement.
When done as an awase, uke tries to parry nage's thrust in #3
but nage immediately withdraws the jo and slides in with a quick
thrust to uke's chest. Uke doesn't make contact with nage's
jo on #3.
4. Yon No Kumijo
Uke begins in hidari kamae.
Nage begins in hidari hanmi with jo vertical on the floor.
Uke performs choku tsuki in hidari hanmi.
Nage grabs the top of the jo with the right hand, thumb down,
and slides back, raising the jo over the left shoulder, preparing
for katate toma uchi (suburi # 12). Nage completes katate toma
uchi by stepping with the right foot, slightly to the right.
The left foot comes across the line to the right. Nage reaches
out to strike uke on the left side of the head.
Uke slides back in left hanmi, raising the right hand overhead
and the left hand low and to the left to protect the left side
of her body. No hand change. Uke brings the jo down to hidari
kamae and performs choku tsuki to nage's face.
Nage steps forward with the right foot, slightly to the left
and performs gyakute tsuki (reverse thrust) to uke's chest.
Nage is sliding in so that uke's thrust goes past nage. Nage's
left foot rotates to the left slightly so there's a slight angle
to the final thrust. There is no hand change.
5. Go No Kumijo
Uke begins in hidari kamae. Nage begins in hidari hanmi
with jo vertical on the floor.
Uke performs choku tsuki in hidari hanmi.
Nage points the tip of the jo toward uke, grabs the jo toward
the bottom with the right hand and slides to the right rear.
The jo remains fairly vertical, the left hand ends up close
to the right shoulder. The hips rotate slightly to the right
to parry the thrust. This is the same beginning as the second
kumijo.
Nage performs choku tsuki to uke's face.
Uke slides back to the right rear, pushing the jo back through
the right hand to the right hip, preparing for katate gedan
gaeshi (suburi #11).
Uke steps forward with the right foot and performs katate gedan
gaeshi, reaching out to strike nage's head.
Nage draws the jo backward through the left hand until the left
hand is at the tip jo, slides the right hand to the center of
the jo, and steps back with the left foot to the left rear.
During the step, the left hand rotates down toward the left
hip and the butt of the jo is raised fairly vertical. The jo
is now on nage's left side.
Uke's strike passes over nage's head. Uke steps forward with
the left foot and performs a vertical strike to nage's head.
No hand change. The entire body and the back foot move forward
to keep the right hand on the jo.
Nage steps back with the right foot, sliding the right hand
to the tip of the jo and the left hand to the center of the
jo. This parry knocks uke's vertical strike to the right. Nage
immediately returns to hidari kamae.
Nage performs choku tsuki to uke's chest.
