Practical Defense Systems class at Methuen Aikido!

Practical Defense Systems (PDS), formerly the Grappling + classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30 pm.

For people who have already taken the Grappling class, the training will be the same except for a greater focus on basic fundamentals including footwork, and body positioning.

The emphasis of this class is not solely on groundwork, which for many people has become synonymous with grappling. As the popularity of the Ultimate Fighting Championships, and Mixed Martial Arts grows, more and more people are interested in this type of training. While we recognize the popularity and demand of these influences, training will remain focused on learning, with sparring as an occasional aspect of that growth. There have been many people that want to come in and do nothing but spar.

While this type of training has its validity, it is my belief that to become a better fighter, you must learn a lot about technique and principle before you can effectively go toe-to-toe with another individual (especially if they are experienced!). This is the part of the training that UFC, and MMA people are engaged in constantly, but is left out in the T.V. programs.

The intention of this article is not to demean or discourage any viewpoints, but to give people a better idea of what this program is about. Its purpose is also to encourage people who want to train in an efficient and practical manner to come join us and see what we’re all about. In the PDS classes training will include, but is not limited to: conditioning, footwork, striking, entering, trapping, grappling, takedowns/throws, groundwork, submissions, some basic weapon defenses, and more!

So whether you are interested in a program that can give you a complete set of martial arts skills, or you just want to complement you’re current training regimen, everybody is welcome to come join us. As always, first classes are free trial classes, and signup is on a “no-pressure” basis.

Thank you for taking the time to find out more about this program, we hope to see you on the mat!
